7 Troubleshooting Tips For A Kohler Engines That Won't Start

What To Do When Your Kohler Engines Stop Working

Kohler engines are renowned for their reliability and power across diverse applications, from lawnmowers to industrial generators. Yet, even the most dependable engines can encounter occasional starting problems.

At EPG Engines, as Australia's leading Kohler Authorised Distributor and Expert Dealer, we're here to help you get your engine back up and running. This guide will walk you through common causes of a Kohler Diesel Engine and Kohler Petrol Engine not starting and provide troubleshooting tips to get you back on track.

1/ Spark Plug

  • Inspect the spark plug for signs of wear or damage, such as cracked porcelain insulators, burnt or eroded electrodes, or excessive carbon build-up. If these conditions are evident, replace the spark plug.

  • To verify spark plug functionality, use a spark plug tester. A strong spark plug should jump between the tester's terminals during engine cranking. If no spark is present, the spark plug is faulty and requires replacement.
  • Ensure that the mental hex or thread of the spark plug is electrically going to "ground" (crankcase) to close the electrical circuit.
  • Low oil level, extreme angle operation, faulty low-oil cut-out switch will also cause the ignition module and the spark plug not to function.

2/ Carburettor Clogging

  • Leaving fuel in the engine for extended periods can lead to a clogged carburettor. Over time, fuel components can evaporate, leaving behind a sticky residue that hinders the engine starting.
  • The initial approach is to clean the carburettor with carburettor cleaner. If cleaning proves ineffective, rebuilding or replacing the carburettor may be necessary.

3/ Ignition Coil Malfunction

  • The ignition coil transmits voltage to the spark plug during engine operation. A faulty coil can prevent starting.
  • Before replacing the ignition coil, ensure the spark plug is functioning correctly. If the spark plug is in good condition, use an ignition coil tester to verify coil functionality. A defective coil necessitates replacement.

4/ Sheared Flywheel Key

  • The flywheel key (the small metal piece connecting the crankshaft and flywheel) can break in half to safeguard the engine in case of sudden stoppage.
  • To inspect the flywheel key, remove the engine's flywheel. A broken flywheel key necessitates replacement.

5/ Faulty Recoil Started Assembly

  • The recoil starter assembly initiates engine cranking by engaging the crankshaft. A malfunctioning assembly prevents starting.
  • Inspect the recoil starter assembly after removal. When you pull the starter rope, tabs on the pulley and cam should engage the engine's hub, causing it to turn. Upon rope release, the tabs should retract, and the rope should rewind. If the recoil starter assembly malfunctions, replace it.

6/ Faulty Start Switch

  • A malfunctioning start switch, exhibiting difficulty in turning or intermittent operation, necessitates replacement.
  • Use a multimeter for continuity testing. The switch should have an open circuit in the "on" position and a closed circuit in the "off" position.

7/ Safety Switch and On-Off Switch Testing

  • Similar to the start switch, both the safety and on-off switches can be tested for continuity using a multimeter. A faulty switch will exhibit incorrect readings.
  • Replace any switch that fails the continuity test.
The table below provides a condensed overview of the troubleshooting examples. Use this as a quick reference guide to identify and address potential causes for your engine's starting problems.
